In the wake of the “active shooter” event that took place in Connecticut on December 14, 2012, this photo speaks volumes.  Perhaps if a sign similar to the above “STAFF HEAVILY ARMED AND TRAINED” sign had been posted outside the elementary school, there might not have been a tragedy at all.

There is a reason that mass casualty shootings don’t happen at rifle or pistol ranges.  And it’s the same reason that so many shootings happen at schools, malls, and other “gun free zones”.  It’s because the bad guys now know where the unarmed people are.  They know know where they can inflict the most damage and kill the most people.  They know that in these “gun free zones” no one will shoot back and end tragedy the moment it starts.  Areas that are posted “All Weapons Are Prohibited” or “Gun Free Zone” seem to attract murderers like magnets to metal.  Simply walking in one of these “gun free” posted areas is the same as carrying a flashing neon sign that says, “I AM AN EASY TARGET!  I WILL NOT DEFEND MYSELF OR OTHERS!  SHOOT FREELY WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE!”  That seems harsh, but sadly it’s true and the recent shootings we continue to hear about in the news is proof enough.

The only thing that will stop a bad guy on a shooting spree is a good guy providing return fire.  I know that doesn’t sound as neat and pretty as passing a new gun law or weapons ban but let’s face it, these murderers broke countless gun laws before they ever pulled the trigger.  One more gun law or weapons ban won’t solve the problem.

What will solve the problem is good citizens like yourself standing up and doing what’s right, being proactive, and not allowing your 2nd Amendment rights to be stripped away from you.  You’re personal rights and freedoms are God given, not government given.  Period.  Don’t let the media or anyone else tell you otherwise.  The 27 deaths that happened in the Connecticut elementary classrooms were horrible, it was disgusting, and maybe, just maybe it could have been prevented by getting rid of the “gun free zone” and reminding the bad guy that armed good guys are out there.  And these armed good guys look and dress like everyone else.  The bad guys need to know that these noble guardians won’t tolerate the harming of innocent children, or anyone else for that matter.

You may think that allowing guns in school buildings and campuses sounds crazy, but I think that allowing my 7 year old child to get shot to death by some homicidal maniac while learning his ABC’s in his kindergarden class is more crazy.  Call me weird, but I think my child shouldn’t have to worry about bullets tearing through his flesh right before the class takes its afternoon nap.  I think all schools, kindergarden through colleges should be able to freely relinquish the “gun free zone” status that makes them such easy and attractive targets.

Would that really work?  Well, the state of Utah allows residents with concealed weapon permit to legally carry in K-12 schools as well as colleges.  How many mass shootings have happened on their campuses?  Zero.  Zilch.  None.  Not one school shooting incident in the entire state, in the entire history of the state.  I think that says a lot.

So next time you hear some idiot at the next social gathering talking as if gun laws or gun bans as if they are the answer, kindly take the time to remind them that when drunk drivers kill innocent people, it’s not the car’s fault.  Remind them in Chicago when someone is beat to death with a baseball bat, that “baseball bat legislation” would not be the answer.  Remind them that a “spoon ban” will never prevent people from getting fat and pencils don’t misspell words.

The reality of our world is simple and true: bad people do bad things.  This world needs more people that are willing to be the strength for those who are weak, the voice for those who don’t have one, and the virtuous protectors of those who are too innocent and unblemished to know that they even need one.  Stand up for what is upright, holy, and just.  Stand up for your freedom, the freedom of others, and your 2nd Amendment rights.  Because without our 2nd Amendment rights, we can’t protect any of our other rights.  Or the simple right to life for our elementary school children.

Please pray fervently for the families and community of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

I agree wholeheartedly with your stance. Gun free zones end up being shooting galleries for the mentally ill. Get rid of the gun free zones and it might be a different social culture. You know what they say, “An armed society is a polite society.”

It’s just too bad that small children had to pay the price for liberals attempting to rape me of my rights my rights one “zone” at a time…
